Name: Sean Murphy
Graduate Programme Stream: Procurement
Hobbies: Any sport, especially football and running
I first heard about the programme from the GradIreland booklets but I also saw Lidl on social media and at graduate fairs. I knew I wanted to do something in Purchasing and I also had some construction background so Procurement seemed like a great fit for me. You get a deep insight into the whole business and you get to see the process from field to shop floor.
Take a deep breath when you join because you get thrown in at the deep end! The responsibility you get from the very beginning is incredible. I was parachuted into big projects and huge contracts, being exposed to the board directors and heads of department straight away. One day you’re buying new equipment and organising installation, the next pouring over new contracts and tenders. It’s so diverse!
As part of our ‘customer first’ initiative I have worked on parent and child trolleys and new queuing systems. Me working with contractors, schedules, manufacturers and store colleagues actually helps customers - you can see the link so clearly. It feels great! It’ll take every ounce of your attention, time management and common sense. I can’t imagine a bigger or better challenge.
